With the level of English increasing in Switzerland, the higher-level Cambridge English Exams are becoming more important. “Cambridge English: Proficiency” is the highest exam level, and yet several thousand people in Switzerland strive to pass it.
With the level of English increasing in Switzerland the expectations from employers as well as higher-education institutions are steadily increasing. Whereas 20 years ago, “Cambridge English: First” or “The First Certificate“, as it was then called, was the exam to have under your belt in order to differentiate yourself from others, it is now important to move beyond that level.
More and more people take “Cambridge English: Advanced” or even “Cambridge English: Proficiency” in order to have a distinguishing qualification. As higher-education institutions offer more and more academic programmes taught in English, their entry requirements in regard to English language competence have increased as well. This partly explains the increased demand for these exams.
Even though it is fair to say that having the “Cambridge English: Advanced” will allow you to achieve almost anything in the work or study environment where high-level English skills are required, “Cambridge English: Proficiency” is certainly gaining in significance.
